I have a passion for creating portraits that resonate emotionally. I strive to render the medium of the photograph invisible, so the viewer can experience the spirit of the people photograph, rather than just their static image. A balance of three essential skills allows me to achieve this goal in my work.

The first element of a great portrait is creating a comfortable space for the subject so they can express themselves without being self-conscious. This is why I prefer to do portraits outdoors, in the subject's home, or in another personal environment. I am a calming presence with a subtle wit and abstract sense of humor that keeps people from regressing to nervous behaviors learned in department store portrait studios.

Once people are comfortable their personality or spirit can shine through, often fleetingly, in a facial expression, gesture or gleam in their eyes. The second skill of a great portrait photographer is anticipating these moments and capturing them onto pixels. From the time I picked up my first Kodak camera as a boy this has come naturally to me. Over the years I have become a master of capturing what is known in photography circles as "the decisive moment".

The third essential skill is the art of visual organization. We all know that some photographs sing while others mumble incomprehensibly. Through years of practice I have honed the ability to see the world in lines and geometry varying in shades of light and shadow. I combine these elements with an understanding of visual psychology and an awareness of time and motion. With these tools I create images that draw the viewer in and hold their interest.
