Farm Sanctuary Farm Animal Photographs

Farm Sanctuary Farm Animal Photographs by Derek Goodwin

One of my ongoing projects is photographing farm animals that live at sanctuaries. Over the years I have spent many hours and days with the animals at Farm Sanctuary. Farm Sanctuary runs two shelters, one in Watkins Glen, NY and one in Orland, CA. I visit each sanctuary as often as I can to document the lives of the animals. The photographs I have taken there have shown up in lots of magazines and brochures all around the world.

The reasons farm animal sanctuaries exist is to expose the cruelties of modern agriculture. The animals that live peacefully now at the farms were all once victims of violence and prolonged cruelty which is inherent in today's systems of factory farming. I believe that the cruelty and violence we allow ourselves to take part in where animals are concerned conditions us to be more accepting of violence towards one another. My goal with these photographs is to suggest to the viewer that perhaps we share more similarities than differences with these noble beings. We are all creatures confined by the flesh we are born into, and the possibility that we can feel empathy better than they can only implicates us further when we cause them harm.

While spending time at Farm Sanctuary I met Jenny Brown, who was doing an internship to learn how to care for animals so she could start her own shelter. Along with her husband Doug Abel she recently opened the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in Woodstock, NY. We have become great friends and I get to spend lots of time with her beautiful animals as well.

these photographs are my explorations of night. from the burning man festival to the streets of new york city i practice mindfulness and experiment with random chance, dancing with the universe and painting impressionist scenes with the tiny sensors of my digital camera. most of these photos have not been manipulated in photoshop. this is how i express myself as a fine artist and spiritual being.
